Adventures in Knitting

27 Aug

Yesterday we met up with a friend from the knit group to go to the beach. She lives very close to this beach and knows all the best spots to hang out. She also has a local beach sticker, so we got right into the parking lots and a front row spot. Griff and I felt very special.

It was a beautiful day and we had a perfect spot. But it was getting hot and it was time to go down by the water to cool off. As we were finishing up cooling off and heading back to our chairs, a lady who was sitting next to us said, “Did either of you ladies bring your knitting to the beach?” Confused we both looked at each other and answered at the same time, YES. To which the nice lady responded, “A seagull made off with your knitting and dumped it into the ocean.”

A what did what? It took us a minute to comprehend what they were telling us. Then the nice lady came over with a Ziploc bag containing what use to be my friends Noro Sock project.

“The gull didn’t make it far, he dropped it into the waves and I grabbed it for you.” “Oh my gosh, thank you.” Was about all we could muster up, still trying to figure out what happened. We ventured back to our chairs and tried to assess the damage.

Wool + Seawater, bad mix.  But this could be considered a fate story, you see. My friend was not happy with the way her socks were coming out. She had been struggling with this project for quite some time. She had even brought up in group the dreaded, to finish or not to finish the second sock. We took it as fate telling her, she should let these socks go.

My poor friend sat there in her beach chair, holding the wool socks she had spent so much time on and just exhaled in disappointment. “I guess I have my answer” she said. She pulled all the project notions from the bag, still looking upset. Then she laughed, “I am damn glad that nice lady got my project bag back, that damn gull would have made off with my good sock needles!”

Ah, Happy Knitting!

This happened more then 24 hours ago and the socks are still spread out on my kitchen counter, and still soaked! I kind of wanted to wait until it was drier to RIP! I did tell the story to a woman I saw at the beach today with her knitting, felt I should warn her!
